Abstract

Photochromic terarylene derivative 4 which has a sulfone group at the upper benzothiophene ring is readily synthesized using Suzuki coupling reaction. It exhibits good photochromic properties. Interestingly, the closed form of the compound 4 shows a good photostability as well as a thermal stability compared with its reduced analog 3, that provides a method to enhance the photostability of versatile photochromic terarylenes under UV.

For example, benzothiophene-bridged system 151 was prepared according to Scheme 47 from 2,3-dibromobenzothiophene and 3-methyl-2-thienylmagneisum bromide in 23% yield (08OL3639). Bis-sulfone 152 prepared from this photochrome does not exhibit photochromic properties, whereas its benzothiophene analog 153 is a typical photochrome (09TL5288), such as dihetarylethenes 154 and 155. However, if a strong electron-attracting group, such as cyano, carboxylate, etc., is introduced at the 5-position, the diazotization/iodination reaction sequence can occur thus facilitating Ullmann homo-coupling and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions. Suzuki coupling reaction has also been used to prepare terarylenes by the coupling of dibutyl(2-methyl-benzo[b]thiophen-3-yl)borane with 2,3-dibromothiophene derivatives <09TL5288>. Functionalized benzothiophenes 78 were synthesized by a twofold Heck reaction with 76 that yielded diene 77 <09TL4962>.
